The Weather and Climate Information Services Early Warnings for Southern Africa (WISER-EWSA) project has had a particular focus on inclusion in its approach to co-producing early warnings of thunderstorms. This video clip shows how the project has trained and worked with community observers and mobilisers (who have now been integrated into the local disaster management structures) who both provide feedback on the weather information, and share it widely within their communities.

Embedded within a season-long 'king-size' testbed, the WISER-EWSA project hosted a two week intensive testbed where forecasters and community observers worked with researchers to co-produce early warnings of thunderstorms. As part of its efforts to co-produce early warnings of thunderstorms, the WISER-EWSA project hosted a multi-country 'king-size' testbed lasting for the length of the rainy season, from 1st October 2024 to 31st April 2025. In this short clip, the testbed co-lead, Itzel San Roman Pineda, outlines how this idea came about, how it has worked in practice, and some of the achievements and lessons learned.

The project has been supporting capacity for nowcasting and co-producing early warnings of thunderstorms with urban communities in Mozambique, South Africa and Zambia. This video clip shows Edson Nkonde, Director of Zambia Meteorological Department, explaining weather and climate information services in his country, and involvement in WISER EWSA has supported their offerings.

The WISER-EWSA project has co-produced early warnings of thunderstorms with urban populations in Mozambique, South Africa and Zambia. This video clip provides an explanation of the impact table used in impact-based forecasting. It was presented during the intensive testbed in Zambia in 2005 to Kanyama community members as part of the process of raising awareness of how to interpret forecasts and nowcasts.

The WISER-EWSA project has had a particular focus on inclusion in its approach to co-producing early warnings of thunderstorms. This video clip shows the experience of a Lusaka (Zambia) school which was provided with a rain gauge. This was done to raise awareness of weather information of learners. It also served to generate observational data to evaluate forecasts and nowcasts.
